ABB ACS880 Fault 3220 — Earth Fault
What This Fault Means
Fault 3220 means the drive detected leakage current to ground on the output phase. This is a safety-critical fault protecting against insulation breakdown.
Common Causes
- Motor cable insulation damage (abrasion, rodent damage, heat)
- Motor winding insulation breakdown
- Moisture ingress into the motor or junction box
- Long cable runs causing capacitive leakage exceeding detection threshold
Recommended Fix
- Disconnect motor cables from the drive and megger each phase to ground.
- If using long cables (>100m), check if the earth fault detection level (parameter 30.10) needs adjustment.
- Inspect motor junction box for moisture — dry and re-seal if wet.
- Test cable insulation separately from the motor by disconnecting at the motor terminal box.
- Replace any cable section that tests below 1 MΩ.
